ctor. One of the best aspects of this work is getting to see a diverse group individuals come together in support of a common cause and do what they can to make their community a better place (as well as have a little fun). They did this at a time when our country is in economic crisis, which we have been told was caused by greed, when people have less to give and we are surrounded by stories of fraud and Ponzi schemes. On this day though, I did not see any signs of that greed or self-centered behavior we hear about. No, I witness kids line up excitedly waiting for their turn to race and a two year old girl taking to the trail with her dad by her side. I saw kids eyes light up as they chased smoke rings at the physics bus as well as learn. I saw local businesses teach them about safety and check their bikes to keep them safe. Parents, volunteers and other racers cheered each other on in some of the best sportsmanship I have ever seen.
I got to meet the amazing kids from El grupo, who understand the need to give because they themselves wouldn't be able to race without the generosity of others. In their cool matching yellow uniforms, which I was tempted to grab for myself, they worked hard as a team and challenged themselves to do the best they could. And in the end all these families, volunteers and business came together to make sure that other less advantaged kids could experience this same kind of fun. If kids who ride bikes like this on a regular basis have this much fun, then imagine what it is like for those who don't normally get to do this. I like being part of something that allows kids to, at the very least, have one day of fun in a difficult and trying life. I don't know about anyone else, but I cannot think of many things I do that are more important than events like this. This is hopefully the first in a series of race, which I plan to be a part of and I hope others will too.Shawn Rudnick
